This is an anonymous design for a ceiling, rendered in pen and brown ink. Reflecting the opulence of its time, this drawing gives insight into the aesthetic values of the elite, where architectural designs often became symbols of power and wealth. We see detailed ornamentation of acanthus leaves, cherubs, and portrait medallions reminiscent of both ancient Rome and the Renaissance, revealing the patrons' desire to align themselves with a lineage of power and culture.
