This drawing of a pedestal surrounded by allegorical figures was created by Francesco La Marra in the 1700s. It is made using graphite, pen and brush on paper. The material and method contribute to its sketch-like appearance, as though we’re seeing the artist’s first thoughts. The pedestal is adorned with figures, angels and text, all rendered with a lightness of touch. It is easy to imagine the artist quickly capturing his ideas with deft strokes. The pedestal at the center looks to be an engraving dedicated to royalty, perhaps made in advance of a larger, more polished work. What might have begun as a humble sketch has been elevated to the status of a museum piece. This raises questions about artistic labor, and how the meaning and value of artwork can shift over time. The drawing is a reminder that the creative process can be just as significant as the finished product.
