This is a photograph of ‘s Lands Hospitaal, in Paramaribo, Ned. Guyana, captured by Augusta Curiel. Look at the way the light filters through the palm trees! Curiel, I imagine, set up her camera, adjusted the focus, and waited for the right moment to capture the essence of this place. It’s a scene of everyday life. I wonder what she was thinking as she framed this shot. Was she interested in the architecture, the people, or perhaps the way the light played across the landscape? What stories could she tell with her lens? I find myself wanting to step into that moment with her, to see the world through her eyes. Photography, like painting, is a conversation across time, in which one image inspires another. What she created resonates with me, not just as a painter but as someone who is always looking, always searching for those moments of connection. It reminds me that art is about more than just what we see. It’s about how we feel, how we remember, and how we connect with the world around us.
