Lorenz Frølich made these three ink illustrations on paper, as a draft for H.C. Andersen's "The Race". The immediacy of the ink medium allows us to glimpse Frølich's creative process. Look closely, and you can see his confidence in the sureness of the lines, particularly in the rabbit's form. This directness speaks to Frølich’s foundation in traditional fine arts, but also to the importance of design as a means of communication. What I find fascinating is how the artist has used a relatively quick medium to explore themes of speed and competition. The visible lines showcase the artist's hand, reflecting his labor and skill. By considering the materials and methods, we can better appreciate the artistic choices made in this piece.
