Hendrick van Beaumont created this drawing, "Boer met sprokkelhout," using pen and brown ink, and brush and gray wash. The immediate impression is one of starkness, mirroring the hardscrabble life of the subject. The gray wash is applied with varying degrees of intensity, giving the figure depth and volume. Look closely, and you will notice how Beaumont uses light and shadow to emphasize the weight of the wood the farmer carries. The lines are thick and expressive, not refined or elegant. This is drawing at its most basic – a direct transcription of reality. The work speaks to broader themes of labor and class. The farmer’s worn clothing and burdened posture tell a story of physical exertion. Beaumont doesn't romanticize rural life. Instead, he shows us the unvarnished truth of daily struggle. This artwork is a potent reminder that the story of art is inseparable from the story of work.
