This photograph of the Groot Kasteel in Deurne, was made anonymously by Monumentenzorg. The sepia tones create a feeling of looking back, of history. It's a beautiful example of how a limited palette can speak volumes. The texture in this image is so subtle, but it's there, like the quiet hum of a conversation. The way the light hits the building, almost blurring the edges, gives it an ethereal quality. It's as if the building is breathing, alive in its own way. Look at how the light obscures the lower part of the building. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's mark-making, in that it has a quality of being there, but almost not. It's a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, each piece building on what came before, yet carving its own path. Art doesn't need to shout to be heard; sometimes, the quietest voices resonate the loudest.
