This Gildenschild was crafted by an anonymous maker in an unknown location, and out of silver. The choice of silver is important here. It is precious, of course, but more significantly, it is highly receptive to surface treatment. Silver is so malleable and soft, that it can be easily engraved and inlaid. This Gildenschild features an etching of a ship, and ornate lettering. It is also worth noting the chain itself, each link painstakingly formed and connected. There’s a real tension here: while the material asserts high value, the artistry involved in the design speaks to the social value of labor, politics, and skilled work. Considering how much effort went into its making, it would be a mistake to view this Gildenschild as a simple luxury object. It asks us to look at the broader context of its production, and at the values of craftmanship. By examining the materials and processes behind this artwork, we are prompted to reconsider traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
