Dimensions 20 x 12.7 cm (7 7/8 x 5 in.)
Curator: This is a “Sketch” by Stuart Davis. Note the dimensions, approximately 20 by 12.7 centimeters. Editor: It’s so simple. I am struck by the economy of line, almost playful in its abstraction. Curator: Davis was deeply engaged with the urban environment and the development of American modernism. I can see echoes of Cubist fragmentation here, but reduced to essential graphic elements. Editor: Yes, and these shapes aren't quite recognizable. Are they architectural forms, or something else entirely? The X, the wavy line…it all feels very symbolic. Curator: Perhaps Davis is exploring the relationship between representation and pure form. He used this kind of study to prepare for larger paintings. Editor: Looking at the relationships between shapes is thought-provoking. It's a fascinating glimpse into the artist's process. Curator: Indeed, a fascinating visual reduction.
