Gino Severini made "A Spring" with pastel on paper. Can you feel how he’s built it up in a way that is almost architectural? I think he’s trying to capture the feeling of spring. It’s all there, broken apart and put back together, like a Cubist puzzle. I can imagine him really getting into the physicality of it, layering pastel stroke upon stroke to create a textured surface. It’s like the painting becomes a garden itself, with a figure kind of emerging from the landscape, or maybe dissolving into it. The sharp angles and planes make me think of analytical Cubism, but there's a playful quality here too. It's like a conversation between representation and abstraction, between feeling and form. Severini and the Futurists were in constant dialogue. They challenged the traditional notions of what art could be, and how it could capture the energy and dynamism of modern life.
