David Burliuk laid down this landscape with thick strokes of blues and greens, smearing it all together. I can almost feel the breeze coming off the water. I wonder what Burliuk was thinking as he worked on this piece? Maybe he wanted to capture a fleeting moment, a memory of a day by the lake? The texture is built up, the paint thick in some areas and thin in others, creating a sense of depth and movement, as if the scene is still unfolding before our eyes. That blossoming tree on the right is really going for it. I love the road pulling us in, that classic painter’s trick. Painters borrow from each other all the time. The way Burliuk layers the paint reminds me of Van Gogh’s landscapes. You know, art doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It’s an ongoing conversation across time. Each painter inspires the next, building on what came before. It’s all one big, beautiful, messy conversation about how we see the world.
