Theo Nieuwenhuis created this wallpaper design featuring branches with berries and a butterfly using an unknown medium. The cool palette of greens and browns gives the impression of a dense, almost overgrown space. The process seems very intentional, controlled, a little like block printing, but with a handmade feel. I'm drawn to the way the repeated motifs create a sense of rhythm and movement, like a visual echo, and you can imagine this design flowing across an entire room. I love how the simple addition of small berries on the branches animates the design, like a burst of energy amidst the calming backdrop of foliage. I think about William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, with its emphasis on nature and craftsmanship, but Nieuwenhuis brings a unique sensibility to his design. It's so interesting to see how different artists engage in this conversation, exchanging ideas and approaches across time.
