This is "Freedom’s Fortune" by Rose Freymuth-Frazier, and it feels like an encounter with a dream. I’m thinking about the smooth brushstrokes in the horse’s mane, how they soften the image, and the roses interwoven within. I imagine Freymuth-Frazier building up layers of glaze to create that golden hue. It’s interesting to see the Monarch butterflies flitting around the roses and the horse like this. Is it a symbol of change, metamorphosis, or something else? I start to think about other painters who have depicted horses, like George Stubbs, but he’s interested in musculature and anatomy, whereas Freymuth-Frazier’s horse is much more poetic and ethereal. I can feel the softness in the colour and the light. The choice of colour and subject matter feels really intentional. We’re all in conversation with each other through the act of painting, responding to those who have come before and adding our own voice to the mix.
