This is Antoine Vestier’s miniature *Portrait of a Lady*, held at the SMK. Vestier, a portraitist working in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, captured the likenesses of the French aristocracy during a period of seismic social change. This portrait offers a glimpse into the world of elite women, their identities shaped by the rigid codes of courtly life. The elaborate hairstyle adorned with flowers speaks to the importance of appearance as a marker of status, wealth, and femininity. The portrait prompts us to reflect on the emotional lives of these women. Were they simply ornaments, or did they find ways to exercise agency within the constraints placed upon them? Vestier's delicate brushwork and attention to detail invite us to contemplate the complexities of identity, gender, and power in a society on the brink of revolution.
