Eugen Klein made this photograph of Gouvernementsplein, Paramaribo, in what looks like a single, alchemical moment. I can almost imagine him under the cloth of a large format camera, the air thick with humidity, waiting patiently for the light. I sympathize with Klein, standing there in the heat, trying to capture something fleeting. What was it like for him? What did he want to say about this place? It’s such a straightforward composition, yet there are so many subtle details, so much to read into. The tone is soft, but rich, like an old memory, and it makes you want to reach out and touch it. The placement of those figures gives the image a sense of scale, and depth. It feels like an invitation to walk down that path, to experience this place for ourselves. I wonder what other photographs Klein made, how his vision evolved over time. There’s a whole conversation happening here between Klein and other image makers, a back-and-forth across time, and place. Painting, photography, they are all about embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
