Letter L in een omlijsting met een vogel

Curatorial notes
This is an ornamented initial L, a minuscule engraving made by an anonymous artist. Consider the labor involved in creating such a small, detailed print. It speaks to the democratization of knowledge that was enabled by the printing press, an object that could disseminate both enlightenment and propaganda. The image is a letterform, but it's also a dense garden teeming with life; a bird, flowers, and twirling vines all compete for space around the stoic letter L. The initial L would have been used to mark the beginning of a chapter or important passage. In a world where literacy was power, the act of embellishing letters elevates the written word to something sacred. The identity of the anonymous artist is lost to us, but their delicate work remains, inviting us to reflect on the hidden hands that shaped the stories we tell. It is an invitation to ponder the stories and histories that have been marginalized or erased.
