Here’s a photograph, probably from around the early 20th century, of a tabletop design by Mathieu Lauweriks. The geometric precision of the design is striking. It’s all radiating lines, stars, and circles, creating this incredible sense of depth and movement. The texture in this photograph is so smooth and matte, it almost feels like a drawing, maybe a blueprint. The sepia tone gives it a timeless quality, and you can see these little imperfections and smudges on the surface, which makes it feel so intimate. My eye keeps getting drawn to where the lines intersect, which creates these tiny focal points, these little moments of visual tension. Looking at this image, I’m reminded of Hilma af Klint's geometric abstractions, and how both artists use these forms to explore unseen dimensions. This piece is a reminder that art doesn’t always need to be loud or flashy; sometimes, the most profound statements are made with quiet, meticulous gestures.
