This Study of a Pediment, now in the Met, was made anonymously with pen and brown ink on paper. What's most fascinating here is the way the material and process reveal a certain mode of architectural design. The strokes of the pen, rapidly applied, suggest a mind at work, full of ideas, sketching and refining. You can sense the direct connection between the hand and the emerging form. The sketch emphasizes the graphic nature of architectural design, reducing a massive stone structure to mere lines on a page. It also shows architecture as a field of intellectual labor, a process of thinking and imagining, before the physical work of building even begins. This drawing reminds us that even the most imposing architectural achievements begin with a humble act of handcraft, bridging the gap between the grand scale of architecture and the intimate scale of drawing.
