Gene Davis made "Leap Frog" in 1975 using ink on paper, and it’s all about process, baby! Look at those expressive lines – they’re not precious, they’re playful. The ink is fluid, almost watery in places, creating these transparent washes that contrast with the stark, opaque black marks. It's like he’s thinking aloud with his brush. There’s this one spot, near the bottom – a cluster of quick, dark strokes that feel totally intuitive, a burst of energy. Davis reminds me of Franz Kline. Both artists create such graphic confidence in monochrome, that feels like a conversation between them about line, gesture, and the pure joy of making marks. "Leap Frog" isn't about perfection; it's about embracing the unexpected and letting the process lead the way.
