Agostino Carracci etched this image, *Allegory of the Psalm of David*, where potent symbols converge. Misericordia, or Mercy, is depicted nursing children, exemplifying charity. Truth holds a book, her foot on a globe, signifying knowledge’s dominion over the world. Justice, with her scales, stands with Peace, who holds a caduceus. Consider the caduceus; in antiquity, it was associated with Hermes, a guide between worlds, and also with medicine. It represents balance and negotiation. Its adoption in medicine is layered; it speaks to healing, but also to the negotiation of life and death. Notice how the maternal figure of Misericordia, reminiscent of ancient fertility goddesses, speaks to deep-seated needs for nurture and safety. These symbols are not static. They evolve, influenced by collective memory, periodically resurfacing with renewed meanings. These images carry a psychological weight, engaging us in a dialogue that transcends time. The dance of symbols continues, revealing the cyclical nature of history and the enduring power of the human psyche.
