Untitled (photograph of helicoptor and building) 1954
Dimensions 12.7 x 17.78 cm (5 x 7 in.)
Robert Burian made this gelatin silver print of a helicopter and building sometime in the 20th century. Looking at it now, I can almost feel Robert in the darkroom, carefully dodging and burning the image, coaxing it into existence. What was he trying to capture? The cold war anxiety? Maybe the optimism of technological advancement? There's a stark contrast between the sleek, futuristic helicopter and the solid, industrial building behind it. The helicopter, caught mid-flight, appears almost ghostly against the dark sky. I wonder if he saw something beautiful in these machines of war. Or perhaps he was just drawn to their strange shapes, their ability to defy gravity. It reminds me of a Walker Evans photograph - a document of a specific time and place, but also a meditation on the human condition. Artists keep revisiting similar themes, responding to each other across time. It’s all one big conversation, really. This image, like any artwork, it's not about finding one "right" answer, but about letting your imagination take flight.
