This photograph of cyclists was made by A. Reichwein and appears in a book. It's a monochrome image and the focus is on capturing a moment, which feels very process-oriented as the image is captured during the act of cycling. I'm drawn to the graininess, the material feel of the photo. You can almost feel the texture of the paper it's printed on. The cyclists are a blur, an amorphous dark mark at the top, conveying speed. Look at the way the spokes of the wheels are captured. They aren't clear, but suggest a circular motion. It's not a perfect image, but that imperfection is part of what makes it interesting. It tells a story, not just of the race, but of the technology used to capture it, of a particular moment in photographic history. It reminds me a little of some of Moholy-Nagy's experiments with photography, playing with light and shadow to create dynamic compositions. Ultimately, art is a conversation, each piece building on what came before, open to interpretation.
