Christian David Gebauer made "Stella," using etching, a printmaking technique that democratized image production. A metal plate, likely copper or zinc, was coated with a waxy, acid-resistant substance. The artist then scratched an image of a hunting dog into this coating with a sharp needle, exposing the metal beneath. The plate was submerged in acid, which bit into the exposed lines, creating grooves. Ink was applied, filling the grooves, and the plate was pressed onto paper, transferring the image. The final touch of color was probably added by hand. The process allowed for the easy reproduction of images, and the creation of multiple copies of the artwork. This new technology transformed the way images were made and circulated. The level of artistry and hand-craft required to make this print gives "Stella" both material and cultural value.
