Cornelis Galle I etched this image of the Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and Zacharias and John the Baptist. Notice the lamb, a prominent symbol, representing innocence and sacrifice, deeply rooted in Christian iconography as a prefiguration of Christ. The motif of the lamb has ancient echoes, appearing in pagan rituals as offerings to the gods. The shepherd with the lamb appears in early Christian art as an allegory of Christ, a figure deeply embedded in the collective unconscious, resurfacing through centuries. This image, with its carefully arranged figures, triggers deep emotional resonance, a powerful connection to our shared cultural memory. As we gaze at this scene, we encounter the non-linear progression of symbols, which echo through time, gaining new layers of meaning with each reappearance.
