Arthur Bowen Davies made this painting, Earths Throat Edge, with a palette of moody blues and earthy browns, smearing and blending the colors to create this mysterious landscape. Looking at it, I can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the canvas, layering and sculpting the paint. I wonder, was he wrestling with the figures, trying to get them just right, or did they emerge organically? Maybe he was thinking of the old masters, like Michelangelo, but trying to do something totally new. You can see how the paint is applied thinly in some areas, allowing the canvas to peek through, while in others, it's built up, creating a tactile surface. I think that the juxtaposition of the figures with the landscape and the cloud formation might refer to classical themes of spirituality and the connection between humanity and nature. Davies, like all painters, was in conversation with the past and present, absorbing, reacting, and pushing against the traditions that came before him. It's all part of an ongoing dialogue, where artists inspire each other across time, shaping the way we see and experience the world.
