While rendered in stark black and white, that directness feels so vivid, almost alive, despite the age of the print and the apparent amateur skill of the author. This “alive-ness,” this sense of the performer reaching out through time, makes one wonder what continuities it has within other imagery across diverse historical eras, like for example images of saints or mythical beings making intense eye contact, creating continuity from past beliefs, expectations and emotional associations to a kind of present one might also interpret here. Do you see that, the echoes of the old in the everyday, which brings it a sense of lasting meaning, perhaps? Editor: Yes, I hadn't considered the weight of older iconography carrying over.
