Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this sketch of furniture on the ship ‘Grotius’ with a pencil on paper. Look at how Cachet built the image with a series of very simple, economical marks. The sketched lines are tentative, like he’s feeling his way around the forms, not quite committing. You can see it in the repetition of lines, like he’s searching for the right contour. The perspective is wonky, but that’s what gives it its charm. It’s like he’s trying to capture the essence of the space, rather than creating a perfect illusion. I love the way he suggests details, like the hooks on the wall, with just a few quick strokes. This piece reminds me of drawings by Picasso, both artists share a similar interest in deconstructing forms and representing them in a more conceptual, fragmented way. What I like most is the unassuming quality, like catching a fleeting thought, an intimate glimpse into the artist's process.
