This photograph, Bergweg met een uitspanning bij de Mont Aiguille te Clelles, was made by Delizy. It’s a small image, but it opens up a whole world. I love the muted tones, almost like a memory fading into sepia. What strikes me is the texture, or rather the lack of it. The surface is smooth, almost dreamlike, yet you can sense the grit of the road, the rough-hewn stones of the buildings, and the sharp peaks of the mountains in the background. My eye is drawn to the haystack, it’s solidity is a nice contrast to the open doorway behind it. It’s this contrast that makes the image sing. It reminds me of Atget, who also captured the everyday with a similar sense of quiet observation. Ultimately, this image is a reminder that art doesn’t always need to shout, sometimes it’s the quiet moments that speak the loudest.
