Wallerant Vaillant created this mezzotint, "Couple Embracing," sometime in the 17th century. The mezzotint technique is all about achieving tone. The metal plate is roughened evenly to create a burr. If printed at this stage the print would be entirely black. The artist then selectively burnishes or scrapes away the burr, allowing for lighter tones. Vaillant was a true master of the craft. Here, the velvety blacks are particularly evident, while the figures almost seem to glow. The artist’s labor becomes less apparent as the technique emphasizes the natural fall of light and shadow on the embracing couple. The choice of this medium invites us to consider the image’s deeper meaning, and the relationship between labor, class, and intimacy. Ultimately, the print exemplifies the power of a specific technique to imbue an image with social, cultural and emotional significance.
