Saint John the Baptist, now in front of you, was carved by Juan de Ancheta in the late 16th Century. It is made of wood, carefully worked to show the subject’s humanity. Take a moment to note the contrast between the raw material, and the lifelike appearance of the figure. The artist skillfully used carving techniques, gently shaping the wood, to create a complex interplay of planes and textures. The use of gilding adds another layer of visual richness. Though the carving looks effortless, it must have taken considerable time and expertise. The artwork reflects a deep understanding of material properties, and how they can be manipulated. Looking closely, you can see the hand of the artist in every detail. Consider how this level of care and attention transforms a common material into a valuable artwork. It invites us to reflect on the social and cultural value of craftsmanship.
