Curatorial notes
Curator: This is a folio from an illustrated manuscript of the Guy u Chawgan by `Arifi, now held in the Harvard Art Museums. The calligraphy is attributed to Mir Ali al Husayni. Editor: Oh, it's luminous! A burst of colour caught in a gilded cage. The angels look like they're dancing, almost weightless. Curator: Note the elaborate borders. This page functions as both an artwork and a means of preserving and transmitting a literary text. The materiality of the paper, pigments, and gold reflect elite patronage and craft specialization. Editor: It does feel precious, like a whispered secret. The way those figures are arranged, it's not a scene so much as a feeling, an emanation. Makes me wonder about what kings need prayer for, anyway. Curator: It is a rare glimpse into the bookmaking process and the cultural economy. Editor: Exactly, and what a thought to hold onto as we turn the page.
