Dorothy Brennan made this watercolor and graphite drawing, Detail of Early Cutter, sometime in the twentieth century. You know, as a painter, I often think about what it was like to create certain drawings or paintings. With its gentle, flowing lines, this artwork reminds me of a calligraphic gesture. It has a natural quality—almost like drawing in one’s sleep. Brennan’s palette is earthy, with hues of brown, orange, and red. The dark and muted tones create a sense of intimacy, as if the drawing is meant to be seen up close, almost secretly. The white parts of the drawing seem like they might have been applied in reverse, by wiping away the darker colour to reveal the blank paper beneath. It’s a lovely and subtle contrast, like a moment of surprise. As visual artists, we are all participating in a giant conversation—one that stretches back to the beginning of time. The beauty of art lies in its ability to evoke feelings and spark imagination, connecting us across time and space.
