This is Paul Klee’s *Astrological Fantasy*, we don’t know when it was made or with what, but you can see it's been built up with lines and layers. Look at the cross hatching and the textures! It's like Klee built the image bit by bit. The color is muted, but the shapes and lines are really sharp. I wonder if he was thinking about how stars are charted when he made this. I can imagine him working on this, carefully hatching each line, maybe thinking about astrology, and making it up as he goes. The black background makes the figure and those shapes float! It reminds me a little bit of Miro, but with more of a plan somehow. Painters are always looking at each other’s work, riffing off ideas. It's like a visual conversation that’s happening across time. These images stay open, they're alive, and we can keep looking at them and finding new things.
