Pedestal Plate c. 800 - 1100

This striking pedestal plate was created by the Coclé people, using earthenware clay. Its form is deceptively simple, yet the details are incredibly complex. Consider how the plate was built: coils of clay were likely used to form the base and the dish, with the walls smoothed by hand, or with simple tools. This highly skilled, labor-intensive work, reflects a deep understanding of the material. The painted decoration is equally considered. Notice the stylized creatures on the plate, painted with mineral pigments. These were carefully applied to the surface before firing. The act of firing itself would have been a community event. The plate’s elevated form indicates its special status, perhaps for ceremonial use or presentation of food. It asks us to think about the cultural significance embedded in handmade objects, challenging the divide between art, craft, and daily life.
