Niels Larsen Stevns made this painting, Cliffs at Røsnæs. Evening, with oils, but I am not sure when. The thick paint gives a real sense of weight to those green cliffs, doesn’t it? Look at the way each brushstroke is laid down with such confidence, building up layers of texture and color. You can practically feel the wind and the dampness of the evening air just by looking at those strokes. There’s a looseness here that invites us to fill in the gaps, to experience the landscape in our own way. Check out the little patch of bright green in the foreground. It’s like a burst of energy, a reminder of the life that persists even in the face of the vastness of nature. It reminds me a bit of Courbet, in his use of realism to capture not just the look, but also the feeling of being in nature. It’s about trusting the process and embracing the ambiguity of the moment.
