This photograph, Jan en Go Kessler tijdens een maaltijd in een bos in Beieren, probably shot with a handheld camera, captures a fleeting moment in a Bavarian forest. The tonal range is narrow, a symphony of grays, where light and shadow dance across the scene. I'm drawn to the way the image is composed. The figures are set within the scene, a sense of life unfolding. Look at the stark contrast in tones between the forrest and the figures, drawing your eye directly to the eating figures. Kessler's photograph feels like a memory, blurred and textured, hinting at stories untold. It reminds me a little of Atget, in the sense that he was trying to do something with the mechanical reproduction of photography. Both are asking questions about the nature of representation and inviting us to contemplate the relationship between reality and artifice. Art isn't about answers; it's about embracing the questions.
