John Flaxman created this design for large fireplace white tiles for Wedgwood's factory using pen and gray ink with gray wash. Note how Flaxman simplifies classical forms into a series of linear outlines. The figure’s contour is defined by a continuous, unbroken line that emphasizes its shape, and the drapery is indicated by parallel lines that follow the contours of the body. The image is reduced to its most essential visual elements. The classical figure in his chariot evokes a sense of historical grandeur, yet Flaxman's approach strips away any excess ornamentation, leaving us with the bare bones of form. The ornamental design on the chariot functions to disrupt the symmetry of the image. The linear style invites a contemplation of form and function, nodding to the complex relationship between art, industry, and classical ideals during Flaxman's time.
