This ‘Untitled’ painting was created by Makinti Napanangka, an Indigenous Australian artist from the Pintupi language group. Napanangka began painting in the 1990s, relatively late in life, as part of the contemporary Indigenous art movement that sought to reclaim and revitalize Indigenous culture after decades of colonial disruption. Her works often depict the ‘Kintore Women’s Ceremony’, a sacred ritual that is deeply connected to the land and the ancestral stories of the Pintupi people. Napanangka’s paintings are not direct illustrations of these ceremonies, but rather evoke the emotional and spiritual essence of these events. Her use of color and repetitive brushstrokes creates a sense of rhythm and movement, inviting viewers to connect with the deep cultural significance of the Kintore Women’s Ceremony. Her paintings represent a powerful act of cultural assertion and remembrance.
