This simple wooden bowl was made by Isaac N. Youngs, a member of the Mount Lebanon Shaker community, sometime before his death in 1865. Youngs lived during a period of significant social and religious reform. The Shakers, known for their communal living and commitment to equality, existed outside of mainstream 19th century America. Their values stood in stark contrast to the growing materialism of the era. This bowl then, isn't simply a utilitarian object but also reflects a deep commitment to simplicity and functionality. The Shakers believed in the beauty of practicality and sought to create objects that were both useful and aesthetically pleasing. Consider how the smoothness of the wood invites touch, and how the bowl embodies the Shaker values of honesty and integrity. It is a reminder of an alternative way of life, one rooted in community, equality, and the pursuit of spiritual fulfillment through labor.
