Seki Shūkō created this painting of fishes swimming, using ink and color on silk. The artist's masterful brushstrokes capture the fluidity and grace of the fish as they navigate their watery environment. Ink wash painting has a long history in East Asia and can be seen as a craft tradition because it requires very specific tools, techniques, and knowledge. The silk ground on which the image is painted is not unlike that used in textiles, and also brings to mind the highly skilled labor of silk production. While Shūkō’s painting is undoubtedly beautiful, it also prompts us to consider the labor and materials involved in its creation. By appreciating the work's material and the processes used, we gain a deeper understanding of its cultural significance, moving beyond conventional art historical perspectives.
