Anton Schutz made this etching of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, using the intaglio printmaking process to create a vintage scene. The technique has this fineness of line that really captures the details of the architecture in a way that feels almost photographic. The composition is framed by these dark, looming archways that contrast with the lighter buildings beyond. The texture in the arches is particularly interesting - you can see the individual strokes and hatching that give them depth. There's a real sense of place, and a feeling of looking back in time, as if we're getting a glimpse into the past through Schutz's eyes. It reminds me a little of Piranesi, with his architectural prints, but this one is more intimate and personal. It’s like Schutz is inviting us to wander with him through Amsterdam, showing us his favorite haunts.
