Editor: This is Sašo Vrabič’s "Meeting in Front of The Television," created in 2004. It looks like an oil painting based on a photograph, rendered in monochrome. It gives me a sense of nostalgia, like a faded memory. What catches your eye about this piece? Curator: Oh, nostalgia is a wonderful starting point! To me, this work whispers of bygone eras, of family rituals observed under the watchful eye of technology. Look at how the artist uses impasto, that thick layering of paint. It's as if Vrabič is trying to reconstruct a fragmented memory, each brushstroke a deliberate act of piecing together what’s almost lost. I can almost smell my grandmother’s cooking and feel the weird hypnotic allure of broadcast television. Doesn't the monochromatic palette amplify this sense of distance and longing? What do you make of that stark contrast? Editor: It definitely intensifies the emotion, focusing my attention. It's funny you say that, but I can see that too! Now I notice how everyone is positioned either looking at the TV or engaging with someone at the table, seemingly unaware of the world beyond that room. Curator: Exactly! There is something voyeuristic about how the viewer peers in. Is it Vrabič’s own childhood he's sharing, I wonder? Or are we looking into our own pasts and familial observances? I like the idea that the scene invites reflections on how much our world and connection to one another has changed since then. It gives food for thought... Editor: This reminds me to be present in our era with digital media. Now I see it captures that feeling when the world stops while a big event is on TV and makes the present moment just a little bit more intimate. Thank you for highlighting Vrabič’s perspective!
