Note how he models volume with stark delineation in the clothing, versus the more even, all-over textures he renders into the donkey and ground. Also consider how our eye wanders around the scene in different directions before coming to rest on the apple that has no spatial relation to any real location in the composition! It is both physically present in the hands of the figures but immaterial and hovering on the scene in some other dimensional space. Editor: I agree it prompts social-historic ideas to bubble up in your head, and it is fascinating that despite the subject being rather simple, the artwork invites some thought of class awareness and tension, perhaps reflecting social structures that seem remarkably timeless in art. The almost crude geometry forces our view to keep moving in its attempt to land at some clear focal point. The spatial ambiguity amplifies the overall tension of the scene! Curator: It’s in the Art Institute of Chicago's collection and rewards our close attention with visual tension in subject matter. It is worth some thought. Editor: It is indeed—I think there's more complexity embedded here than initially meets the eye.
