Vera Nedkova made "A Family" with paint and probably some brushes, though I can't be certain about when. It's got this fantastic earth-toned palette that feels so connected to the land. You can almost feel the sun beating down. The paint is laid on thick, especially in the foreground figures. Look at the woman's dress. See how Nedkova uses these bold strokes of pink and white to give it form? It’s not about perfect realism but about capturing the essence. The way she builds up the layers, you can tell she's really in tune with the materiality of the medium. There's a roughness to it, an honesty that I find really appealing. This piece reminds me a bit of Paula Modersohn-Becker, another artist who wasn't afraid to embrace the raw, tactile qualities of paint to express something deeply personal and connected to the everyday. Art, after all, is just a long, ongoing conversation.
