Curatorial notes

Jacob Ernst Marcus created this study sheet with pen in October 1808. It holds an ensemble of figures, with a sleeping boy as the focal point. Made during the Batavian Republic in the Netherlands, the drawing presents a fascinating snapshot of its time. The presence of a figure in military uniform suggests the ongoing Napoleonic influence. Meanwhile, other figures seem to represent the everyday life of ordinary people, perhaps hinting at social tensions. The sketch-like nature of the work offers insight into the artist’s process, it’s a kind of visual inventory. Considering the historical context – the political upheavals and shifting social structures of the time, the study prompts us to ask: what kind of world were people building? To fully understand the artwork, resources like historical archives, political pamphlets, and social commentaries can provide a deeper understanding of the Dutch Republic. Art, after all, doesn't exist in a vacuum but speaks volumes when set against its world.
