Editor: This is Edward Lear's watercolor, "Church of the SS. Quattro Coronati, Rome." It gives me a serene, sun-soaked feeling, almost nostalgic. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It whispers of time, doesn’t it? The gentle washes create an impression of faded grandeur. The way Lear captures the Roman light reminds me of memory itself - luminous, but softened at the edges. Notice how the architecture feels both imposing and strangely vulnerable. Editor: Vulnerable, how so? Curator: Look at the peeling plaster, the exposed brickwork. It’s a beautiful decay, a reminder that even the grandest structures are subject to the relentless caress of time. It makes me wonder about the stories held within those walls. What do you think? Editor: I think I was too focused on the light to really see the decay, thanks! Curator: It's all about layers, like the city itself.
