This is an anonymous design for a stained glass window with a world map, made with pencil, pen and brush in watercolor. The cool thing here is that this piece isn’t trying to hide its process. It’s not about slickness. It’s about revealing the marks that made it, which I find really exciting. There's this beautiful grid, with warm, orange and yellow washes that bring the design to life. The world map sits in the middle, drawn in soft blues and purples, all delicate and a little bit wonky. It feels so human, so made by hand. The imperfections give it character and charm. Look at the way the continents are sketched out; each one is so carefully considered, yet there’s this looseness to it all. It reminds me a bit of Paul Klee, with that same playful approach to form and color. But who knows, maybe some other artist was looking at this piece in turn! Either way, it’s a reminder that art is this ongoing conversation, where we’re all just riffing off each other, trying to make sense of the world in our own way.
