Exposition Universelle Des Arts Incoherents 1889

This is Jules Chéret’s poster for the “Exposition Universelle des Arts Incohérents,” or "Incoherent Arts Exhibition". It was a Parisian art movement which took place in the late 19th century. The Incohérents emerged from the cabaret scene of Montmartre, a historically bohemian district in Paris. The art and performances challenged the rigid art establishment, often through parody and absurd humor. Theirs was a world of shadow play, irreverent performances, and experimental art. In many ways, it was a reaction against the stuffy art salons of the time. In this poster, Chéret captures that rebellious spirit. The jumbled lettering and the grotesque clown’s face seem to mock the traditional art world's obsession with coherence and beauty. It’s a playful jab at the gatekeepers of culture, a statement that art can be found in the unconventional, the absurd, and the downright silly. Yet, it begs the question, is the establishment really challenged if the establishment is laughing?
