This is ‘Très Parisien, 1923, No 7: 14.- CASINO. / 1. Somptueuse est cette Scintillante...’, made in 1923 by an anonymous artist, and it's now in the Rijksmuseum. I wonder who designed it? Looking at these two figures, I can imagine them appearing to the designer, emerging gradually from their work. They seem to be stepping out, asking to be seen. They have clear forms, but their surfaces are a riot of shape and color. I particularly like the figure on the left, who has a red belt around her waist and appears calm, confident and poised. There’s a dynamic tension here, an exchange between the artist and the idea. They seem to be conversing in an imaginative game of mark-making and construction. The artist could be any one of us, responding to the world and adding to a conversation about painting that has been going on for centuries.
