This fashion plate, Très Parisien, from 1923, is by an anonymous artist working with print media. What strikes me is how the shapes and colors aren't trying to create a believable illusion. Instead, they’re like playful inventions, almost cartoonish. Look at how flat the figures are, really allowing the repeating patterns of the dresses to take center stage. Notice the dress on the right, especially the way the design is laid out. The composition is quite playful, embracing a kind of organised chaos. The artist has a great eye for creating a vibrant surface that hums with energy. The thin lines of the printmaking process gives it a wonderful texture and depth. It reminds me a little of Sonia Delaunay, who blurred the lines between fashion and fine art. Ultimately, it’s a reminder that art doesn't always have to be serious, and sometimes the most interesting things happen when we embrace a sense of play.
