This albumen print shows the tanning factories along the Morge in Maringues. You can see the layering, the way the image develops, much like how a painting comes together, bit by bit. There’s a real material presence in this work. The sepia tones are warm, enveloping, and suggest the feel of a different time, which I find really beautiful. Look at the buildings to the left. I love the way the artist’s eye moves up those layers of balconies and wooden supports, creating a kind of rhythm. It's almost like a musical score; the eye hops up and down these different levels. Delizy's work reminds me a bit of Eugène Atget, who also captured the look and feel of a particular place. Art is a conversation, after all, a way of seeing and interpreting the world that’s always changing, always evolving. There’s a kind of openness in this image, an invitation to wander and to see.
