Nicolas Perelle made this print, “Building on a River,” sometime in the 17th century. Perelle, a French artist, was born into a family of painters and printmakers. This tranquil scene, typical of the period, invites reflection on the intersection of nature and society. The figures along the riverbank and in boats represent human presence, their lives intertwined with the landscape, even though they are dwarfed by the architecture and trees. The building itself is partially obscured by vegetation, hinting at themes of decay, or the inevitable reclamation of human structures by nature. Perelle made many landscape scenes that can be seen as documents of 17th century attitudes towards the natural world. What do you feel as you imagine yourself in this scene? What emotions and identities do you attach to the space? Though seemingly timeless, images like this reflect the culture and society from which they emerged. They serve not only as art, but as historical documents of human interaction with the world.
